EEMS Ltd have completed the conversion work to create a Home Safety Unit for Tayside Fire and Rescue. The unit was recently launched at the Perth Station at hosted by Chief Fire Officer Stephen Hunter in conjunction with the Perth and Kinross Community Safety Partnership.

EEMS Ltd were approached to provide a complete conversion of an existing demountable unit, the aim being to provide an educational and instructional resource that can be used throughout Perth and Kinross.

The unit is built to replicate a domestic environment and was equipped by EEMS Ltd with simulated, but realistic hazards that can occur in the home.

The unit comprises a bedroom, bathroom, living room and kitchen area each with common hazards relevant to that area. Examples of these are simulated chip pan fires, kitchen trip and burn hazards and a television where a badly place vase of flowers can cause a fire risk. The bathroom area demonstrates risks relating to accessible medicines and harmful cleaning products which can be commonplace.

The ambience of the unit has been enhanced through the use of flame projectors and a computerised Smart Board further demonstrates, through visitor interaction, the message of home safety.

A surround sound system was also included to effectively show videos to the public to further communicate risks in the home.

Finally the unit has been fitted with a wide range of "Telecare" products, as used by Perth and Kinross Community Alarms Team. These are all based on wireless technology, and are designed to keep the vulnerable person safer within their home environment.

The unit is fully transportable via a prime mover to a location from where it can be accessed by local groups.

EEMS Ltd are proud to have been able to realise this solution and the feedback on the day was excellent.

Councillor Willie Robertson of the Perth and Kinross Safety Partnership was quoted by the Courier:

"Home safety is a very serious issue, especially for some of our most vulnerable residents. The Home Safety Unit is an innovative way of engaging people and showing them practical and simple steps they can take to avoid accidents in the home. I am sure this scheme will help make a difference."
